A Knitting Trip From Start to Finish

In addition to the conference on Traditional Knitted Sweaters Around the Baltic Sea, the various meetings I had with knitters around Estonia, the Käi ja Koo or Walk & Knit Contest that I participated in, the private knitting classes that I had on specific Estonian knitting techniques, and the yarn shops and handicraft shops that I visited, knitting appeared other places as well.

I was delighted to see support posts at the Tallinn bus station that had been "yarnbombed" - covered in knitted fabric since 2011.

Beautiful gloves, mittens, and socks were displayed and available to purchase at the Heimtali Craft Fair.

And I see that The Dutch Knitters must have a lot of influence in the Netherlands; even the dinner placemat on my KLM flight home was a "knitted" replica of The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer.

  1. The sock/mitten tree--makes me drool. What a wonderful trip you had! Thanks so much for sharing your travels adventures. I have had so much fun reading about them. I only dream of traveling to Estonia/Latvia some day. I have cousins living still in Riga--wish to do a yarn shop/museum tour. Till then, I live vicariously through the adventures of others. THANKS so much for the pictures--beautiful!

  2. Hello Mary!

My name is Ava Herceg. I will be traveling from San Francisco to Estonia for the first time ever on May 4th is search of knitting and yarn inspiration from Tallin. I am from San Francisco, studied art and design in New York City and I’m taking a holiday from my work to explore Icelandic and Baltic craft cultures for a few months.

I would love to know if you have any suggestions for locations, museums, workshops, events, craftsmen and women I should see in Estonia on my journey. People and places that will help inform me about Estonian crafts and techniques with a focus on knitting in particular.

I look forward to hearing from you, and hope this finds you well! Happy Spring!
